چکیده

Second and third order longitudinal structure functions and wavenumber spectra of isotropic turbulence are computed using the EDQNM model and compared to results of the multifractal formalism. At the highest Reynolds number available in windtunnel experiments, Rλ = 2500, both the multifractal model and EDQNM give power-law corrections to the inertial range scaling of the velocity increment skewness. For EDQNM, this correction is a finite Reynolds number effect, whereas for the multifractal formalism it is an intermittency correction that persists at any high Reynolds number. Furthermore, the two approaches yield realistic behavior of second and third order statistics of the velocity fluctuations in the dissipative and near-dissipative ranges. Similarities and differences are highlighted, in particular the Reynolds number dependence.

Simulation of Low Reynolds Number Isotropic Turbulence Including the Passive Scalar

Full simulations of homogeneous isotropic turbulence containing a homogeneous passive scalar were made at low Reynolds numbers and various Prandtl numbers. The results show that the spectral behavior of the two fields are quite similar; both fields decay as power-law functions of time. However. the decay exponent is quite dependent on both the Reynolds and Prandtl numbers. The decay exponent of...

Vortex tubes in velocity fields of laboratory isotropic turbulence: dependence on the Reynolds number.

The streamwise and transverse velocities are measured simultaneously in isotropic grid turbulence at relatively high Reynolds numbers Re(lambda) approximately 110-330. Using a conditional averaging technique, we extract typical intermittency patterns that are consistent with velocity profiles of a model for a vortex tube, i.e., Burgers vortex. The radii of the vortex tubes are several of the Ko...

Lagrangian evolution of velocity increments in rotating turbulence: the effects of rotation on non-Gaussian statistics

The effects of rotation on the evolution of non-Gaussian statistics of velocity increments in rotating turbulence are studied in this paper. Following the Lagrangian evolution of the velocity increments over a fixed distance on an evolving material element, we derive a set of equations for the increments, which provides closed representation for the nonlinear interaction between the increments ...

Spectral and hyper eddy viscosity in high-Reynolds-number turbulence

For the purpose of studying the spectral properties of energy transfer between large and small scales in high-Reynolds-number turbulence, we measure the longitudinal subgrid-scale (SGS) dissipation spectrum, defined as the co-spectrum of the SGS stress and filtered strain-rate tensors. An array of four closely spaced X-wire probes enables us to approximate a two-dimensional box filter by averag...

Relationship between Turbulence Modulation and Skewness in Wall Bounded Flows

Recent investigations into wall-bounded turbulent flows have shown a nonlinear scale interaction, whereby the largescale motion amplitude modulates the small-scale structures (Hutchins & Marusic, 2007b). Mathis et al. (2009) developed a scheme to quantify the degree of modulation using a decoupling procedure, based on the Hilbert transformation applied to the filtered small-scale component of t...
